TLDR: Many entrepreneurs try to improve their marketing by copying strategies that don’t fit them. In this extract from Marketing Like We’re Human, Sarah Santacroce explores how identifying your natural strengths allows you to market your business in a way that feels aligned and effective.
This article is an extract from my book Marketing Like We’re Human. In this chapter, we explore how to identify your unique marketing superpowers. Instead of following external rules and “shoulds,” we look at how your natural strengths can guide the way you show up in your business.
The pressure to follow the “right” way
There is no shortage of advice when it comes to marketing.
Post more.
Be visible.
Show up every day.
Follow this formula.
And while some of this advice can be helpful, it often comes with an underlying message:
There is a right way to do marketing.
And if you’re not doing it that way, you’re doing it wrong.
Over time, this creates pressure.
You start to question yourself.
You compare.
You try to adjust.
Not because it feels right.
But because you think you should.
Why this approach doesn’t work
The problem is not the strategies themselves.
The problem is that they are not neutral.
They are usually designed for a certain type of person.
Someone who is comfortable being visible.
Someone who enjoys constant interaction.
Someone who thrives on speed and volume.
But what if that’s not you?
What if your strength is depth instead of frequency?
What if you prefer thoughtful conversations over constant posting?
When you follow strategies that go against your nature, your marketing starts to feel heavy.
And when something feels heavy, it’s hard to sustain.
A personal realization
There was a time when I tried to follow all the “best practices.”
I showed up where I thought I had to be.
I created content the way I was told to.
I tried to keep up with the pace of others.
And I could do it.
But it didn’t feel good.
It felt forced.
Disconnected.
Draining.
It wasn’t until I stepped back that I realized:
I wasn’t lacking discipline.
I was ignoring my natural strengths.
What are your marketing superpowers?
Instead of asking:
What should I be doing?
Try asking:
What comes naturally to me?
What feels energizing instead of exhausting?
What do people consistently appreciate about how I show up?
Your superpowers are often the things you take for granted.
The way you listen.
The way you explain.
The way you create space.
The way you connect ideas.
They may not look flashy.
But they are powerful.
There is more than one way to grow
You don’t need to do more.
You need to do what works for you.
For some, that might be speaking on stages.
For others, writing quietly and consistently.
For some, it’s building community.
For others, it’s working deeply with a small number of clients.
There is no single path.
Only your path.
Why this matters for your business
When you build your marketing around your superpowers:
You become more consistent.
Because it feels natural.
You become more confident.
Because you’re not pretending.
And you become more effective.
Because people can feel the difference.
A question to sit with
What are the ways of showing up that feel most natural to you?
And how could you build your marketing around that, instead of around what you think you “should” be doing?
