TLDR: Many entrepreneurs feel pressure to “find their passion,” but that approach can feel forced. In this extract from Marketing Like We’re Human, Sarah Santacroce explores how following curiosity and discovering your WHY creates a more natural and sustainable business.
This article is an extract from my book Marketing Like We’re Human. In this chapter, we explore the idea of purpose in business. Instead of chasing passion, we look at a more gentle and realistic approach: following your curiosity and discovering your WHY over time.
Follow your curiosity
We often hear that we need to “find our passion.”
But what if that feels like too much pressure?
What if you don’t know what your passion is?
Instead of forcing clarity, try something simpler.
Follow your curiosity.
What are you naturally drawn to?
What topics keep coming back?
What conversations energize you?
Curiosity is quieter than passion.
But it’s often more reliable.
Passion is overrated
Passion is often presented as something fixed.
As if you either have it, or you don’t.
But for many of us, passion is something that evolves.
It grows through experience.
Through trying things.
Through staying with something long enough.
When we wait for passion before we act, we often stay stuck.
When we follow curiosity, we move.
A personal reflection
Looking back at my own journey, I can see that things didn’t start with a clear purpose.
There were different steps.
Different experiments.
Different directions.
At the time, it didn’t always make sense.
But each step led to the next.
Only later could I see the thread connecting everything.
Your WHY is not a formula
In business, we are often told to define our WHY.
Write it down.
Make it clear.
Use it in your messaging.
But your WHY is not something you force.
It’s something you uncover.
It lives in:
Your experiences
Your values
Your story
And it often becomes clearer as you move forward.
Your WHY is not something you decide once. It’s something you discover over time, by paying attention to what feels meaningful and true.
A different way to think about purpose
Instead of asking:
What is my passion?
Try asking:
What am I curious about right now?
What feels meaningful today?
What do I want to explore next?
These questions are easier to answer.
And they move you forward.
Why this matters for your business
When you build your business from curiosity and evolving purpose:
You create something more sustainable.
More flexible.
More aligned with who you are.
You stop forcing clarity.
And start allowing it.
A question to sit with
What are you curious about right now?
And how could you follow that curiosity, even in a small way?sn’t truly fit?
