How Can Your Business Be a Win-Win for Everyone?

How Can Your Business Be a Win-Win for Everyone?

TLDR: Many businesses are built around maximizing profit, often at the expense of people or values. In this extract from Marketing Like We’re Human, Sarah Santacroce explores how creating a win-win approach can lead to more meaningful and sustainable success.

This article is an extract from my book Marketing Like We’re Human, a book about ethical, humane, and human-centered marketing. In this chapter, we explore a different way of thinking about success in business. Instead of focusing only on profit, we look at how creating value for everyone involved leads to more sustainable and fulfilling growth.

The traditional definition of success

In many business environments, success is measured in numbers.

Revenue.
Growth.
Conversion rates.

And while these metrics matter, they don’t tell the whole story.

Because they don’t show:

How you got there.
Who it impacted.
What it cost along the way.

When success comes at a cost

Sometimes, business growth comes with hidden trade-offs.

Pressure on clients.
Overpromising results.
Burnout behind the scenes.

From the outside, everything may look successful.

But internally, something feels off.

Because success that comes at a cost is rarely sustainable.

A different way to think about business

What if success wasn’t just about what you gain?

What if it was also about what others experience along the way?

A business can be built in a way where:

Clients feel supported
You feel aligned
The process feels respectful

This is what a win-win approach looks like.

What “win-win” really means

A win-win business is not about pleasing everyone.

It’s about creating value in a way that feels fair and aligned.

Where:

You are paid well for your work
Your clients receive real value
The relationship is built on trust

Not pressure.

Not compromise.

But mutual benefit.

A personal perspective

Over time, I realized that I didn’t want to build a business that only looked successful from the outside.

I wanted something that felt right from the inside.

Where I could stand behind my work.
Where my clients felt genuinely supported.
Where the process itself felt good.

That meant making different choices.

Slower sometimes.
More intentional.
More aligned.

Why this matters for your business

When your business is built as a win-win:

You create long-term relationships
You reduce pressure and burnout
You build something that lasts

And success becomes something you can actually enjoy.

A question to sit with

What would change in your business if success meant creating a win-win for everyone involved?

FAQ

Can I run a business that is ethical and still make good money?

Yes. An ethical, win-win business focuses on fair exchange—where you are paid well and your clients receive real value. This often leads to stronger trust, repeat business, and more sustainable income over time.

What does a win-win business look like in practice?

In practice, it means clear communication, honest marketing, fair pricing, and working with clients who are a good fit. Both sides benefit without pressure, manipulation, or unrealistic promises.

How do I grow my business without using pushy or manipulative tactics?

You can grow by focusing on trust, relationships, and value. Instead of creating urgency or pressure, you share helpful insights, communicate honestly, and let people decide in their own time.

Why does my business feel successful on the outside but not on the inside?

This often happens when growth comes at a personal cost—like burnout, misaligned clients, or marketing that doesn’t feel honest. External success doesn’t always reflect internal alignment.

Does a values-based business grow slower?

It can grow more gradually at first, but it often leads to stronger relationships, better retention, and long-term stability—rather than short bursts followed by burnout.
