TLDR: Traditional marketing often relies on pressure and persuasion. In this extract from Marketing Like We’re Human, Sarah Santacroce explores how leading with empathy and care creates deeper trust and more meaningful relationships in business.
This article is an extract from my book Marketing Like We’re Human a book about ethical, humane, and human-centered marketing. In this chapter, we explore what it really means to care in your marketing. Instead of using tactics that push or manipulate, we look at how empathy and genuine connection can guide the way you communicate.
The problem with traditional marketing
Much of traditional marketing is built on pressure.
Scarcity.
Urgency.
Fear of missing out.
“Act now.”
“Don’t miss this.”
“Last chance.”
These tactics can work.
But often, they don’t feel good.
Not for you.
And not for your audience.
Why manipulation creates distance
When marketing is driven by pressure, something subtle happens.
Trust begins to erode.
People may respond in the moment.
But over time, they become more cautious.
More skeptical.
Less open.
Because they can feel when they are being pushed.
Even if they can’t always explain why.
A different approach
What if marketing didn’t have to feel this way?
What if, instead of pushing, you focused on understanding?
Instead of convincing, you focused on connecting?
This is where care comes in.
Care is not a tactic.
It’s an intention.
What it means to truly care
Caring in your marketing means:
Listening before speaking
Understanding before offering
Respecting your audience’s pace
It means trusting that people will make the right decision for themselves.
Without pressure.
Without manipulation.
A personal shift
There was a time when I followed many of the traditional approaches.
I used the language.
I applied the tactics.
And while some of it “worked,” something didn’t feel right.
It felt misaligned.
It wasn’t until I allowed myself to step away from those methods that things began to change.
I started to communicate differently.
More honestly.
More openly.
More respectfully.
And the response changed too.
Care builds trust
When people feel that you genuinely care:
They listen differently.
They trust more easily.
They engage more deeply.
Because they don’t feel like they are being sold to.
They feel like they are being understood.
Why this matters for your business
When your marketing is rooted in care:
You build long-term relationships.
You create trust that lasts.
You attract clients who feel aligned with your values.
And your business becomes a space of connection, not pressure.
A question to sit with
How would your marketing change if you focused more on caring than convincing?
