TLDR: Many entrepreneurs believe they need to do everything on their own. In this extract from Marketing Like We’re Human, Sarah Santacroce explores how collaboration and partnerships can create more ease, connection, and sustainable growth in your business.
This article is an extract from my book Marketing Like We’re Human, a book about ethical, humane, and human-centered marketing. In this chapter, we explore a different way of growing a business. Instead of doing everything alone, we look at how collaboration can open new possibilities and create more meaningful connections.
The myth of doing it all yourself
In the entrepreneurial world, there is often an unspoken expectation:
You have to figure it out on your own.
Build your audience.
Create your content.
Sell your offers.
Manage everything.
And while independence can feel empowering at first, over time it can become heavy.
Lonely, even.
Because building a business was never meant to be a solo journey.
Why collaboration matters
When you collaborate, something shifts.
You’re no longer carrying everything by yourself.
You share ideas.
You share energy.
You share visibility.
And often, you reach people you would have never reached alone.
Collaboration is not just about strategy.
It’s about connection.
A personal experience
Looking back, many of the most meaningful moments in my business came through collaboration.
Conversations that turned into partnerships.
Introductions that led to new opportunities.
Shared spaces where ideas could grow.
None of these were planned in a strategic way.
They emerged through genuine connection.
Through trust.
Through openness.
Collaboration over competition
We are often taught to see others in our field as competitors.
People we need to outperform.
People we need to stand out from.
But what if we shifted that perspective?
What if, instead of competing, we looked for ways to collaborate?
To support each other.
To amplify each other’s work.
Because there is enough space for all of us.
What collaboration can look like
Collaboration doesn’t have to be complicated.
It can be:
A conversation
A shared event
A guest appearance
A joint offer
A simple introduction
Small collaborations can lead to meaningful results.
And they often feel much more natural than traditional marketing strategies.
Why this matters for your business
When you build your business through collaboration:
You create relationships, not just transactions.
You expand your reach in an organic way.
You feel less alone in the process.
And most importantly, your business starts to feel more human.
A question to sit with
Who are the people you genuinely enjoy connecting with in your field?
And how could you collaborate with them in a simple, meaningful way?

FAQ

Yes. When collaborations are based on trust and alignment, they often lead to highly engaged audiences and better-fit clients because people are introduced to you through someone they already trust.
Look for people who share similar values, audiences, or perspectives. The best collaborations come from genuine connection, not just strategic advantage.
Start with a genuine connection. Engage with their work, build rapport, and then suggest a simple, mutually beneficial idea. Keep it human and low-pressure.
No. Collaboration is not about size—it’s about alignment. Even small audiences can create meaningful partnerships when there is trust and shared purpose.
It can complement or even replace some of them. Collaboration often feels more natural and relationship-based than traditional marketing, while still helping you grow your visibility.
